Young Writers' Workshop at NTL
Young
Writers Short Story Workshops 2013
At
The Newbury Town Library
Author
and Creative Writing Teacher Paul Myette, with Miss Olivia, invite young
writers to join us as we workshop short fiction, here at the library. We ask
for a commitment to all these dates and times, so that our writers will be able
to produce one new, original piece of short fiction. Writers are encouraged to
bring original writing they are working on, or an idea for a story they would
like to begin. This workshop is open to all middle school and high school
students.
The first three, hour-long workshops will help
writers to dissect the form of the short story, working on these three
important aspects, all allowing to make for a rich and well-written piece.
·
Thursday,
July 18th from 5-6 PM: Developing Dialog
·
Thursday,
July 25th from 5-6 PM: Developing Action
·
Thursday,
August 1st from 5-6 PM: Developing Conflict
Writers will then share with the group their
stories, allowing for teachers and peers to positively critique and work
through any issues the writer might be having with the story.
·
Thursday,
August 8th from 5-7 PM: Critique
We invite our writers, their families and friends,
to join us with some light refreshments as we hold an open-mic here at the
library to celebrate the completion of this workshop and their final pieces of
short fiction.
·
Thursday.
August 29th from 5-7 PM: Story Share
Spaces
will be limited, and all writing levels and abilities are welcome. Please
contact Miss Olivia to register now! 978-465-0539 or ogatti@mvlc.org

Record Breaking Origami
Wow! What a spectacular turn out for Michael Lafosse's Origami workshop here, this past weekend.
Thank you everyone for making it such a great turn-out! Love seeing families create together!
Thursday, March 21, 2013
Origami with Michael LaFosse
How much fun is origami? It seems like you just mention the word, and young or old, boys or girls, everyone kind of goes, "Ooooh. I love origami." Well, so do we. And we happen to know a great teacher: Michael LaFosse, author of nearly 75 titles on origami and paper arts!
Michael LaFosse, who also just happens to be an international origami master, and lucky for us, a neighbor. Michael's studio Origamido is in Haverhill, and he is more than happy to come our way to teach us some tricks with paper art.
Please join us as we welcome Michael back to the library, Saturday, April 6th at 11:30 AM. Ages five to 100 welcome! We are going for full capacity, but would appreciate it if you call the library at 978-465-0539 or email me at ogatti@mvlc.org to let us know if you plan to attend.
Hope to see you there!

Wednesdays This Spring
I am so pleased to announce not one, not two, but THREE new partnerships with local teachers to offer you more wonderful (and free) children's programming here at the library on Wednesdays, starting in April.
Roots to Wings Yoga for PreK at The Newbury Town Library
Beginning Wednesday April 10th at 1 PM and continuing every 2nd Wednesday through November
Beth Houlihan and Candy Blaxter will lead our kids (3-5) with caregivers in a special yoga class designed to help preschoolers learn how to care for their body, mind and spirit. This fun and lively yoga class will include hatha yoga, playful games, music and more. The Roots to Wings Mission is to help children reach their highest potential physically, emotionally, academically and socially; ultimately helping each child have a deeper understanding of themselves and develop skills that enable them to achieve and make a positive difference in the world.
Crafternoon with Rani MacNeal at The Newbury Town Library
Beginning Wednesday April 17th at 1:30 PM and continuing every 3rd Wednesday through November
Rani MacNeal, a marine biologist, home-schooling mother of three, and earth-momma-extrodinare will lead children of all ages through a seasonally-themed craft once a month. Great for big hands or little hands with some help, we will use all types of materials and mediums and walk away with a wonderful craft to share with our families.
Creative Movement with Julie Pike Edmond at The Newbury Town Library
Beginning Wednesday, April 24th at 11:45 AM and continuing every 4th Wednesday through November
Julie Pike Edmond uses her experience as a professional dance, choreographer, and body worker to teach students how to move in concert with their natural abilities -- simultaneously encouraging young dancers to push their creative boundaries while maintaining happy, healthy bodies.
Julie's class will explore the concepts of space, time and energy, while developing self-awareness, flexibility and coordination. Each class is 45 minutes long, and is geared for children ages 3-5, who can be dropped off for the class. Please come in comfortable clothing for moving and dance!
All these programs are free! Please register for your space today, as each class has limited capacity. Call the library at 978-465-0539 or email Miss Olivia at ogatti@mvlc.org

Nile the Whale
Hey, remember that day we had a forty-three foot whale in the library?
We were so fortunate to host a wonderful whale program here at the Newbury Town Library this month, courtesy of The Whale Mobile and educator and whale advocate, Cynde McInnis. Cynde taught us all about whales, their habitats, behaviors and sounds. Then we watched as Cynde inflated Nile, made to resemble its humpback namesake that is often spotted off the coast of Cape Ann, right before our eyes (a crowd of over 100 folks and kiddos!).
We moved from station to station learning about whales all morning long. From discussing how to keep the ocean clean, to examining actual whale bones and baleen, to climbing inside of Nile to really check him out! It was an amazing learning experience for everyone!

Penguin Puff!
Take big pom-pom, a little orange foam triangle for feet. Add a white paper circle with eyes and a beak drawn on in marker. Throw together little pop-pop ear-muffs. And what do you get?
A penguin puff!
Happy crafting from Simple & Sweet Story Time!

Baby, It's Cold Outside
Which is what makes the Do Drop In! Playgroup super fun! While the temperature drops, we meet in our warm and bright library to play and create, with old friends and new. This informal playgroup encourages families to get down and make a mess, meet other families in the area, and explore all the library has to offer, both inside and out. We meet on Thursdays from 10:30 to noon, and while most of our action takes place in the big meeting room, I encourage you to play in the Children's Room too, where books, puzzles, puppets, dress-up and more await! Hope to you do drop in sometime soon!

From the Inside of a Whale
Have you ever wished you could get really close to a whale? So close, you could even climb inside it? Do you love these amazing marine mammals? Would you like to learn more about their behavior, diet, and ways to protect them? If so, this is your lucky day! Seriously.
Internationally renowned Whale Specialist, Cynde McInnis, will be visiting us at the Newbury Town Library, with her 43 foot-long Humpback Whale, Nile, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2nd at 10:30 AM!
This event is FREE, but due to capacity, we will limit enrollment to the first 60 children and teens registered. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up. Please call the library at 978-465-0539 or email ogatti@mvlc.org.
For more information about this program, please visit Cynde's wesbite: www.thewhalemobile.com
Author Visit
I'm so pleased to invite you all to come meet one of my favorite children's book author and illustrator, Ms. E.S. Redmond! She is fabulous and funny, and we are going to have a great time as she reads to us from her newest book, The Unruly Queen and then leads us in a craft! Books will be available for sale after the reading, and Ms. Redmond will stick around to chat and sign books for you!
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
E.S. Redmond visits the Newbury Town Library, SATURDAY, JANUARY 26th, at 12:30!
This is a FREE event! Please register with us at 978-465-0539 or email ogatti@mvlc.org so we can have enough crafts for everyone!
